Instructional Unit for the Science of Sound and Music
The four free web apps we used today, in the order we used them. Each one runs in a web browser, so you and your students can keep exploring sound on any computer, tablet, or phone.
TOOL 1
Play and visualize signals to explore waveform, frequency, pitch, timbre, and the limits of human hearing.
TOOL 2
See the shape of a sound wave through your microphone, then record, amplify, and loop sounds.
TOOL 3
See all the frequencies that combine to make a sound. Students can also tune instruments and compose with scales.
TOOL 4
Watch how air particles move as sound travels. Adapted from PhET simulations.
Want more? See every tool, with tutorials, on the Listening to Waves Sound Tools page.

CAREER CONNECTIONS
A series of mini documentaries featuring young people on STEM career paths related to sound and waves. Share them with students to spark conversations about where science and music can lead.
Want to bring the Science of Sound and Music to your school, or join a future Listening to Waves workshop? Let us know, and we will keep you in the loop on upcoming opportunities.
